Quantitative article review: Violence in schools Quantitative, as opposed to qualitative research is a data-driven exercise in which a population is scientifically analyzed using an experimental and control group: In quantitative research your aim is to determine the relationship between one thing (an independent variable) and another (a dependent or outcome variable) in a population. Quantitative research designs are either descriptive (subjects usually measured once) or experimental (subjects measured before and after a treatment). A descriptive study establishes only associations between variables. An experiment establishes causality (Hopkins 2000). Quantitative experimental research can be extremely valuable and necessary in determining whether various types of social programs work, to ensure that research dollars are being spent effectively. This was the aim of the quantitative research study on violence in schools entitled The effects of gender violence/harassment prevention programming in middle schools: A randomized experim ental evaluation (Tay lor Burden 2010). The topic of this research is extremely relevant given that all educational institutions must comply with US Federal Law Title IX (1972) prohibiting sexual harassment. Also, most schools strive to promote gender equality, tolerance, and strive to reduce violence as a general social good.
